Pattern for Noontime Quilt
from PIECES: A Year in Poems and Quilts by Anna Grossnickle Hines
Materials:
  • Scraps of assorted fabrics
    • blues and pastels for sky
    • greens and small florals for pasture
    • browns for cows
  • Fabric for borders, 1/8 yard.
  • Batting and backing
General notes:
  • Quilt is 83/4 by 111/4  inches not including borders.
  • Quilt is made of small squares 11/8 inch on a side.  When sewn they are 5/8 inch.
  • Cows are paper-pieced and placed as indicated in assembly diagram.
  • First cow is paper-pieced in 3 sections, then sewn together. Second cow is 4 sections.
  • Patterns are reverse of what will show on quilt.
  • Pattern may be traced onto freezer paper. Ironing fabric onto shiny side of freezer paper will help hold it in place.
  • Each cow block should be 21/2 x 17/8 inches. If they do not print accurately, try this PDF file. Adobe Acrobat Reader is necessary.  For a free download click here.
  • If you would like to make a 14 x 18 inch quilt using 11/2  inch squares, go to this pattern.
Directions:
  • Cut 11/8 inch squares
    • Numbers given are what you will use. Cutting more gives options as you place them.
    • Sky: 130 squares
    • Pasture: 98 squares, include some lighter shades for the background.
  • Trace patterns for cows onto freezer paper, if using. Draw on papery side.
    • Pattern for First Cow will be cut apart along bold lines between sections A, B and C.
    • Second Cow will be cut apart along bold lines between sections A, B, C, and D.
    • Mark positioning lines across these cutting lines to match up when you reassemble parts.
    • You may also want to indicate which spaces are cow and which are pasture.
  • Paper-piece First Cow
    1. Cut sections A thru C apart along bold lines.
    2. Begin with section A. Cut pasture fabric big enough to cover space 1 with at least ¼ inch seam allowance on all sides.  Place wrong side of fabric on plastic side of pattern covering space 1.  Press to hold.
    3. Cut cow fabric big enough to cover space 2 plus seam allowances. Place right sides together with fabric 1.  (Pattern will be on back of fabric 1.)
    4. Holding fabric 2 in place, turn pattern line side up and sew along line between 1 and 2.  Open seam and check to see that fabric covers space 2.
    5. Fold pattern along seam line. Trim seam to 1/8 inch. Unfold and press.
    6. Cut cow fabric big enough to cover space 3 plus seam allowances. Place right sides together with fabric 2.
    7. Holding fabric 3 in place, turn pattern linseed up and sew along line between 2 and 3.  Open the seam and check to see that the fabric covers space 3.
    8. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for spaces 4 thru 7, using pasture fabric for spaces 4 and 6, cow fabric for 5 and 7.  Set aside.
    9. Follow steps 3 thru 9 and use appropriate fabrics to construct sections B and C. You may want to use a slightly darker brown for space 2 on section B, under the cow’s ear.
    10. Place sections B and C right sides together, matching your positioning lines. Stitch using 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Open and press.
    11. Place section A right sides together with sections B-C, matching your positioning lines. Stitch using 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Open and press.
  • Paper-piece Second Cow
    1. Cut sections A thru D apart along bold lines.
    2. Follow steps above to paper-piece all four sections.
    3. Follow step 10 to sew sections B and C together.
    4. Do the same to sew C and D together.
    5. Follow step 11 to sew section A to B-C-D

  • Follow diagram or picture of quilt to lay out squares.
    • A flannel or foam layout pad (18 x 24 inches) keeps them from sliding around.
    • Place lighter colors along horizon line, brighter colors near bottom of quilt.
    • Move squares around, blending and contrasting colors until you like what you see.
    • Leave spaces for cows as indicated in Assembly Diagram.
  • Stitch squares in rows, and rows into blocks as indicated.
  • Stitch blocks together.
  • Remove paper from back of cows.
  • Add borders, sandwich, quilt, and bind.
